Why is TV still a thing?

TV sucks. It is boring and dumb. That’s not to say that I don’t like some of the shows on TV, but I certainly don’t like anywhere near all of the shows.

I’ve never really been one for TV, actually. My mother monitored how much my brother and I watched it (an hour per day, until we were 13 or so), and during Katimavik (a 9-month TV-free zone) I didn’t miss it much at all. In fact, I forgot about it. Sure, we watched the occasional Family Guy or South Park episode on particularly boring nights, but when my billets (families we would stay with for 2 weeks) would offer me the remote, I’d sort of just blankly stare at nothing, then go and find the book I was reading.

We live in an age where we have countless options at our fingertips. If I want to hear a song, I can hear it the second I want to. I don’t have to wait for the radio to play it, so that I can record it onto a cassette tape anymore. I don’t even need to go out to the store to buy the CD. I can just open iTunes (or… er… another program of my choice) and get the song. Wham bam thank you ma’am. Same thing goes for movies, books, news, weather reports… Why on Earth would I wait until 15 minutes after the hour to watch the local weather on The Weather Network, when I can press one button on my Macbook or iPhone?

So why do these things exist? Do they not seem like a bit of a waste of time and energy at this point?

Do you still watch/enjoy traditional television, or are you on the Netflix and On Demand (or other, less legal means…) bandwagon with everyone else?
